Project Description
National Excavator Initiative (NEI) 811
“Pipes, Wires, and Cables” and “I’ve Got Gas”
Program Description:
Did you know that over 30% of digging-related accidents are caused because people didn’t call 811 first to find out what they were digging into?
The fact is, our lives depend on the more than 5 million miles of communication cables, electricity lines, and water and sewer pipelines running just under our feet. But when a home or professional excavator unknowingly cuts into one of those lines, the result is often disastrous… even fatal.
And yet, that’s exactly what happens every 60 seconds.
Popular television host, producer, and author Mike Rowe is working with the National Excavator Initiative (NEI) to change that through two entertaining but informative PSAs. Entitled “Pipes, Wires, and Cables” and “I’ve Got Gas,” the spots underscore the importance of the 811 “Call Before You Dig” phone number in protecting ourselves, our neighbors, and our property.
Campaign Mission:
- Increase recognition and use of the 811 “Call Before You Dig” number
- Help prevent digging-related injuries among home and professional excavators
- Help prevent damage to critical infrastructure
